Every week users can post ideas on quirky to be rated by the quirky community. After a seven day evaluation period, the quirky community chooses one product from the pool of submitted ideas.

If the product is a good enough idea, it goes into production and is sold at the quirky online store – and the creator is paid a percentage of the earnings.

Swoopo - Buy and Place Bids for Products

Swoopo - Buy and Place bids for Products

Swoopo is a place for online auctions where users can hunt bargains. The site offers fast paced online auctions for new technology products, appliances and lifestyle goods, including laptops, vacuum cleaners and handbags. By charging a small amount for each bid placed they are able to offer the winners incredible deals, and give everyone who bids a thrill along the way.

Swoopo using a different auction scheme. Where EBay uses a slightly modified Vickrey auction system, Swoopo uses an auction system based on the “Dollar Auction” game - with interesting results.Their system is an open auction with a very tight time limit, where each bid made increases the price by seven pence, costs the bidder fifty pence to make and increases the time limit by a couple of seconds. This might seem benign at first, until you do the maths

The auction procedure is unique in the world. Each bid increases the price of the product by 15 US cent and the auction time extends automatically by up to 20 seconds. Each bid costs one US-Dollar Cent. The last person to bid wins the bid when time runs out. On average the winner saves 65 percent compared to the suggested manufacturer’s retail price, including his used bids.

An even stranger kind of auction takes place on the site - a “100% off” auction, where the final price does not have to be paid. Whoever makes the final bid before the timer runs out gets the object of the auction for no additional cost beyond the bidding fees.
