Currently PublicEarth offers an ever-expanding database of nearly five million places, across 450 categories including such esoteric topics such as “Nut Harvesting”, “Famous Death Locations”, and “Glass-blowing Studios” etc.

As you search or browse categories, it pulls information in Google maps, and then applies a customized categorization and set of data fields to each entry.

The real value to PublicEarth is that every one can create a point of interest, draw a boundary line around a park, or trace a route to walk or hike.

Manage Personal Places with “Placebooks”

On PublicEarth, you can create and maintain “Placebooks” which organize and manage you personal locations for ease in sharing, searching, and travel planning and activity discovery.

You can also access these Placebooks on a GPS device, a mobile phone or e-mail them to friends. PublicEarth also lets you display your saved places on your own website or blog by creating and embedding a widget.

The site even comes with an API that allows developers to access PublicEarth’s huge database of recommendations.
