Currently PublicEarth offers an ever-expanding database of nearly five million places, across 450 categories including such esoteric topics such as “Nut Harvesting”, “Famous Death Locations”, and “Glass-blowing Studios” etc.
As you search or browse categories, it pulls information in Google maps, and then applies a customized categorization and set of data fields to each entry.

Manage Personal Places with “Placebooks”
On PublicEarth, you can create and maintain “Placebooks” which organize and manage you personal locations for ease in sharing, searching, and travel planning and activity discovery.
You can also access these Placebooks on a GPS device, a mobile phone or e-mail them to friends. PublicEarth also lets you display your saved places on your own website or blog by creating and embedding a widget.
The site even comes with an API that allows developers to access PublicEarth’s huge database of recommendations.

This allows people to quickly discover places and activities that best suit their needs while short-cutting the overload of unstructured local data on the Internet.
The site generates city guides for users with a variety of different criteria using the huge database. It has been launched with support for twelve cities initially, with plans to ramp up to more in the near future.

Yoplr - Personalized Travel Planning Web App
Posted by ilovegajeebo in startups on January 10th, 2009
Yoplr is another of the travel sites which claims to be innovative but fails to do so. One of the major problem is people have no time to get register to plan a travel when there are already plenty of services which do the same without getting registered.
We tried our hands to get registered but could not make through. Although the site looks decent but lacks the attraction to lure the casual visitors.
